I agree 100 % that's why I got out on my 1st enlistment. I was Gung ho going into the Marine Corps. I went in 1987. At least I served Honorably and went on to because a police officer and retired after 20 years of police service. I do miss the Marines but like you said that toxic leadership and mass punishment.

Most of it won't apply to you because most of it doesn't apply to anyone--but by the time you get down there you're going nowhere due to how much they've already spent on you--you'll want to leave the minute you get there because everyone wants to leave (some actually do, somehow, until they're found, anyway). I was not Marine Corps material--although some will say I was, like that time I casually mentioned punching someone in the throat at a bar--I was aiming for his chin and missed, putting an immediate end to a problem--when you say things like that, the 1st Civ. Div. thinks you should be committed but it was justified--there were other times when it wasn't justified and I should have been arrested; at any rate, if I thought I wasn't what they were looking for (I did okay compared to others but was no ground-breaker and never would be) when I think of others in high school who'd also joined--if anyone wasn't military material they weren't--you'd be shocked at who makes it through--high school photos of skinny pukes with mullets, dweebs with no friends or skills, people who told the school to go to hell as often as possible or those who always did their homework--you'd be surprised at how well some of them did at P.I. (like the fat kid in homeroom who came back like the all-weather coat they'd made out of him).

I was planning on joining after high school but ended up failing a few times and got medical disqualified. I went to college and got myself a computer science degree (a hard degree to get) and working on networks. I believe it was just the Gods telling me that I wasn’t for the military path.

High school or GED needed?

I am going to visit Okinawa in January 2025 for 2 weeks. I used to teach Isshinryu karate and would like to visit dojos. I am 73 witha BS in Business. How hard would it be for me to get a working visa and a job? I also plan to visit Shinto and Buddhist temples as I am a Buddhist. Some of my old friends were Marines and they urged me to visit Okinawa City (Koza City) and it's Four corners. Can I spend US Dollars or must I first convert to Yen? I speak very little Japanese having only learned Hiragana and Katakana. Finally would you marry an Okinawan woman and bring her back to the States?

Congrats Marine. I left as an e5 at the end of a 4 year enlistment.Honestly do not know if 1. I would have ever gotten promoted if i had re enlisted and 2. If i would have made a good e6 if i had. RVN was winding down and the corps was resizing as a result.

I was in the Marines from 1996-2000. I was in the MEF HQ Group which was formerly SRIG (Surveillance Reconnaissance Intelligence Group) a little bit before I was assigned to the command at Camp Pendleton CA. I found the book and loved it. I later found the mini-series and thought the same. This is just about the most accurate Hollywood representation of how the Marine Corps is, especially in the last 25-30 years. I watched this with my then fiancé and told her that. I knowingly laughed along with the funny parts and told her that’s pretty much how it is. About the only thing I saw that wasn’t that accurate at least from my time in the Corps was the blatant disrespect shown to commissioned officers. I wasn’t in Division but that’s something that wasn’t tolerated in my command. For one thing, we just weren’t in direct contact with our officers enough to do such a thing. I married someone in the army when we were 20. I moved cities for him, didnt get to keep a job and he was very secretive with his phone and financial state. Got discharged after 2 years and claimed disability and all of our bills were never paid on time. Some werent paid on at all. I found other womens belongings while cleaning, he accused me of cheating on multiple occasions even though he always knew my whereabouts and had access to my phone. He also claimed that I wasnt on his benefits, so I couldn't go to the doctor, dentist or anything. Most of my money went to him while he was bringing home 6k+ a month. I just got the divorce finalized after he tried fighting it, and found out he put me in 8k+ debt by pulling loans out in my name and leaving our previous apartment trashed with all my stuff. I lost almost all of my belongings. Don't do it.

I am an Honorable US Marine Combat Veteran, my MOS was the infantry. I was promoted to Corporal and Sergeant with the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion. When I was promoted to Staff Sergeant, I had the honor to become an infantry unit leader, 0369 a Platoon Sergeant with India Company 3/9. To train, to lead my Platoon and prepare them for combat. During that rank of Staff Sergeant is when I was at the best of my career in the infantry field which is for me, the true meaning of being a Marine. We did get the call for action and I lead my Marines into combat. In your video you mentioned, you just got promoted, perhaps my brother Marine, it was to soon to come to your conclusion. With every rank comes a responsibility. A Staff Sergeant, as an Infantry Platoon Sergeant is the true leader, the best duty and rank. It's the back bone of the Corps. The medical training that parallels the civilian medical training the best is the USAF. The USAF will take three times as long to train you as civilian training but you will get a useable certification.

When you are in your schoolhouse stay focused on school only, don't drink, don't talk to girls, don't do anything just finish the fucking course and get to the fleet, i'm currently in my schoolhouse and dumb ass pfcs and pvts get njpd every weekend because they just can't help but be stupid, they just have to get drunk and do the dumbest shit they can think of.
